History of Clinicon

The company has for a long time been involved in the development and production of automated discrete chemistry analysers for clinical chemistry.

The Development of the first analyser (Auto Chemist) began in Sweden and was the brainchilk of the two brothers, Dr Gunnar and Ingemar Jungner. They thought even in the early 1960’s that computers should be used to control instrument functions. These ideas were developed during the 1960’s by a division of AGA AB a large Swedish Public company.

The first system was installed in Sweden in 1968 and others were sold within Europe, Japan and USA. One large private laboratory in USA ordered the last production version of Autochemist in 1979.

Prisma the next analyser grew from the early experiences with Auto Chemist and its development continued during early 1970’s. The first production version of Prisma was installed in a Swedish laboratory during 1978 and in USA 1979.

In 1975 the devision of AGA was sold to a large Swedish based Scientific instrument company, LKB Produkter AB.

During 1978 LKB took the decision to move out of the clinical chemistry field and sold it’s interest in this area to Boehringer Mannheim a wellknown reagent manufacturing company. An independent company ith the name Clinicon was established. After some years Boehringer Mannheim sold the company to Synergy Int.

In Summer 1984 New Clinicon took over as an entirely separate Swedish production and development company with the backing of the major Swedish banks and emploied many key omployers from the original Auto Chemist days.
